What Does it Mean to ‘Hire and Develop The Best?’ | Amazonian Leadership Principles

Legally, a corporation is its own separate entity, its own body, acting in the marketplace as an individual. But just like bodies of our own, every company is made of parts and, no matter how small—many moving parts that vary in size and responsibility, and yet all contribute to the same thing: the health of the company.

So, how does this idea of the importance that each person is a part of one whole, maybe not acting in unison, but wanting the same things, relate to the Amazonian Leadership Principle, “Hire and Develop the Best?”

To put it simply, if you want your body to perform well and achieve longevity, you hold yourself to high standards to push your limits, impose discipline, and grow in all ways (at least, ideally). But this ONE goal comes with a lot of care and nuance for each and every part that makes up the company.

Hire and Develop The Best
So how does this manifest with employees and how we all affect the larger goal of a healthier company? I’d say there are three:
  1. It’s “Hire AND Develop the Best,” not exclusively Hire; as a leader, you have the unique opportunity to hire (or ‘choose’) who may make up the company. This said, developing is TRUSTING in your people to deliver, NURTURING their skills, and sometimes taking a step back to ALLOW them to grow into helping the larger whole.
  1. Just like in personal development, a company—as a body—is always best holistically, meaning that each part is member of the team is meant to be embraced and met where they are once on board. For example, you wouldn’t expect an arm, however strong, to do a better job than your leg in running a marathon for you. That’d be ridiculous. But if your arms and legs begin to work in unison—and it may take time—this will speed you up, give you more thrust, and help the body go farther as simple (but vital) roles are better understood over time.
  1. There will be defects, defeats, and doubts along the way. Just like an actual body, a company is not perfect; its strongest parts may become overworked, others may atrophy, or you may just trip and fall. You may lose footing or just get fatigued. A bad back may not mean your back is actually “bad,” but maybe you just need to strengthen your core to alleviate some of its pressure. This is okay. Expect setbacks, aches, and pains as you go—it’s all a part of it.
In short, “Hiring and Developing the Best does not mean perfect, it means the best for that role, and learning along the way how each part functions in order to better the sum of it all. If you could excuse the final body metaphor, I’d say @Cornerstone technologies is “running” along quite well, and only speeding up.
